Adult Studies, Week #5, “In the Beginning: Genesis, Then and Now”

The first eleven chapters of Genesis contain several of the most well-known and foundational stories of the Bible, such as the Creation stories, Cain and Abel, and Noah’s Ark. These chapters are referred to by many scholars as the “Pre History” texts, in that they reflect both an awareness of and attempt to understand some of the fundamental human questions:

How did we get here?
Why are we here?
Why are there suffering and violence?
Where is God in all this?

Over the course of this five-week unit, we will explore some of these renowned stories, emphasizing the larger questions they point to, as well as how they might help us answer those questions for ourselves in our time.
